Effective Date: N/A Revision Date: N/A Anesthesia - Pelvis (Except Hip) Feed
Anesthesia for interpelviabdominal (hindquarter) amputation.
Modifiers may be applicable to describe specific circumstances, such as physical status modifiers (P1-P6) or those for CRNA services (QX, QZ), medical direction (AD, QK, QY), and MAC (G8, G9, QS).
Medical necessity must be supported by documentation justifying the interpelviabdominal amputation, such as imaging studies, diagnostic reports, and treatment plans detailing the severity of the underlying condition.
In simple words: The anesthesiologist provides all necessary care related to numbing and monitoring the patient's vital signs during a surgery to remove half of the pelvis and one leg. This includes checking the patient before and after the operation, giving them medication to make them sleep and not feel pain, and watching their heart rate, breathing, and other important signs. It does not include any special monitoring procedures.
Anesthesia services for interpelviabdominal (hindquarter) amputation, which involves removing half of the pelvis and one entire lower limb. This includes pre- and post-operative evaluation, inducing and monitoring the patient during the procedure, administering fluids/blood, and standard monitoring (ECG, temperature, blood pressure, oximetry, capnography). It does not include unusual monitoring like Swan-Ganz catheters or central venous lines, which are coded separately.
Example 1: A patient with a malignant tumor affecting half of the pelvis and one leg requires an interpelviabdominal amputation. The anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia and monitors the patient throughout the extensive surgical procedure., A patient involved in a severe accident has sustained traumatic injuries to one side of the pelvis and leg, necessitating a hindquarter amputation. Code 01140 is used for the anesthesia services provided during the emergency surgery., A patient with a severe infection that has spread to the pelvis and leg requires an interpelviabdominal amputation as a life-saving measure. The anesthesia services for this complex and high-risk procedure would be billed under 01140.
Documentation must include pre- and post-operative evaluations, type and amount of medications used, monitoring methods, patient responses, start and stop times of anesthesia, and any unusual monitoring performed. The total anesthesia time should be recorded for billing purposes.
