2025 CPT code 01480

Anesthesia for open procedures on the bones of the lower leg, ankle, and foot.

Modifier 23 can be appended for unusual anesthesia, such as when the patient is in the prone position or field avoidance is required. Physical Status modifiers (P1-P6) should be used to describe the patient’s health status. Additional modifiers may be necessary to specify the type of anesthesia service, who performed it, or whether medical direction was involved (e.g., AA, AD, QK, QS, QX, QY, QZ).

Modifiers are applicable to this code. Refer to the current CPT manual and payer guidelines for appropriate usage of modifiers.

Medical necessity for anesthesia is established by the need for pain control and/or sedation during the surgical procedure on the bones of the lower leg, ankle, or foot.

The anesthesiologist is responsible for the patient's well-being throughout the surgical process concerning anesthesia. They evaluate the patient pre-operatively, administer the anesthesia, monitor vital signs, manage any complications, and oversee the post-anesthesia recovery.

In simple words: This code covers the anesthesia given to a patient having open surgery on the bones of their lower leg, ankle, or foot. The anesthesiologist assesses the patient before and after surgery, puts them to sleep for the operation, keeps an eye on their vitals during the procedure, gives them any needed drugs and fluids, and looks after them as they wake up.

Anesthesia services for open procedures performed on the bones of the lower leg, ankle, and foot. This includes pre- and post-operative evaluation, inducing the patient, monitoring vital signs during the surgery, administering necessary medications and fluids, and managing post-anesthesia care. It does not include specialized monitoring techniques like Swan-Ganz catheters or central venous lines, which are coded separately. The anesthesia time begins when the anesthesiologist prepares the patient in the operating room and ends when they are no longer directly responsible for patient care.

Example 1: A patient undergoes open reduction and internal fixation of a fractured tibia. Code 01480 is used to report the anesthesia services provided., A patient has an open procedure for removal of bone fragments in the ankle following a traumatic injury. Code 01480 is used for the anesthesia provided during the procedure., A patient has a bunionectomy performed as an open procedure. Code 01480 would be reported for the anesthesia services.

Documentation should include a pre-anesthesia evaluation, details of the anesthesia administered, intraoperative monitoring reports (ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, etc.), medications and fluids given, and a post-anesthesia report. The total time of anesthesia administration must be clearly documented.
