2025 CPT code 0701T

Molecular fluorescent imaging of suspicious nevus; each additional lesion (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)

Modifiers may be applicable.

The provider applies the fluorescent dye, captures the image, and interprets findings.

IMPORTANT:(Use 0701T in conjunction with 0700T)

In simple words: A special type of imaging uses a fluorescent dye and a camera to look at a suspicious mole and check for abnormal cells. This code is used for each additional mole checked during the same appointment.

The provider uses a fluorescent dye, special imaging device, and analysis software to assess a suspicious mole for tissue changes and cell abnormalities. This code applies to each additional lesion after the first. The provider applies a fluorescent peptide (strings of amino acids) dye that binds to biomarker protein-receptors in the mole (nevus) and surrounding area. A biomarker is a measurable substance that can indicate an abnormal process. The provider uses the imager to excite the dye and capture fluorescence to mark tissue undergoing changes from benign to abnormal. Analysis software may use the data and mole characteristics, like size, shape, and color, to assess the likelihood that the tissue is undergoing changes. This code applies to each additional lesion after the first.

Example 1: A patient presents with multiple suspicious moles. The provider uses molecular fluorescent imaging on three lesions. 0700T is reported for the first lesion, and 0701T is reported twice for the additional two lesions., During a skin examination, two moles show concerning characteristics. Molecular fluorescent imaging is used to examine them both. 0700T is used for the first mole, and 0701T for the second., A patient has a history of melanoma and presents with a changing mole alongside a new mole, both requiring assessment with molecular fluorescent imaging. 0700T would be used for the first mole examined and 0701T for the second.

Documentation should support the medical necessity of the procedure, such as changes in size, shape, color, or other concerning features of the mole. Number of lesions imaged should be explicitly documented.

** This is an add-on code and should always be reported in addition to 0700T when multiple lesions are examined. Category III codes are temporary and may eventually be converted to Category I codes or deleted.
