2025 CPT code 15772
Effective Date: N/A Surgical Procedure - Other Flaps and Grafts Surgery/Integumentary System Feed
Grafting of autologous fat harvested by liposuction technique to trunk, breasts, scalp, arms, and/or legs; each additional 50 cc injectate, or part thereof (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure).
Modifiers may be applicable depending on the specific circumstances of the procedure (e.g., 52 for reduced services, 78 for unplanned return to the OR).
Medical necessity must be established for the fat grafting procedure. This may include correction of deformities, volume restoration, or improvement of function.
The physician harvests fat via liposuction, prepares it minimally, and injects it into the recipient site in multiple small aliquots using a cannula. This code represents the additional injections beyond the initial volume covered by 15771.
In simple words: This procedure involves taking fat from one area of the body using liposuction, processing it, and then injecting it into another area like the trunk, breasts, scalp, arms, or legs. This code is used for every additional 50 cc (or part thereof) of fat injected after the initial amount, to add volume or improve shape.
This code describes the injection of each additional 50 cc, or part thereof, of autologous fat harvested via liposuction and grafted to the trunk, breasts, scalp, arms, and/or legs.It is used as an add-on code to 15771 for the initial 50cc or less of injectate. The fat is injected in small aliquots to fill defects or reshape contours.
Example 1: A patient receives autologous fat grafting to the breasts after a mastectomy. The initial 50cc is reported with 15771. An additional 70cc of fat is injected, requiring one instance of 15772., A patient undergoes liposuction and fat grafting to the abdomen and thighs. A total of 120cc of fat is injected into the abdomen (coded with 15771 and 15772) and another 80cc into the thighs (coded with 15771 and 15772). Due to different anatomical locations, 15771 and 15772 will be reported for each site., A patient with lipodystrophy receives 230cc of autologous fat transfer to the buttocks. 15771 is reported once, along with four instances of 15772 (for the additional 200cc).
Documentation should include details of the liposuction harvesting, fat preparation technique, injection sites, and total volume of injectate at each site. The medical necessity for the procedure should also be documented.
