2025 CPT code 29520

Application of adhesive strapping to the hip to provide support and limit movement.

Refer to the current CPT coding guidelines for appropriate use of this code.Adhere to local payer policies for specific requirements.

Modifiers may be applied as clinically appropriate (e.g., 59 for a distinct procedural service, 76 for a repeat procedure by the same provider, 25 if an EM is performed on the same day).

Hip strapping is medically necessary to provide support, reduce pain, and improve joint stability in patients with various musculoskeletal conditions such as strains, sprains, dislocations, and certain fractures. The necessity is established through clinical evaluation and documentation of the patient's symptoms and physical examination findings.

The provider assesses the patient's hip condition, positions the patient for optimal tape application, prepares the skin, applies the elastic adhesive tape correctly, ensuring appropriate tension and support, and documents the procedure.

IMPORTANT:If evaluation and management services are also provided, consider using modifier 25 to indicate a significant and separately identifiable E/M service on the same day.

In simple words: The doctor uses special tape to hold the hip joint and muscles in place to help reduce pain and support the hip after an injury like a strain, sprain, or minor fracture. The tape helps to limit any unnecessary movement and provides stability to the injured hip.

Application of elastic adhesive tape to the hip joint and surrounding muscles to provide support, stabilize the joint, and limit excessive or abnormal movements. This procedure is indicated for various conditions such as muscle strains, sprains, dislocations, and certain fractures. The application involves careful positioning of the patient, ensuring the area is clean and dry, and applying the tape in a circular manner around the buttocks and hip, assessing fit and pressure to achieve appropriate support. The procedure includes the initial application of the strapping.

Example 1: A patient presents with a hip strain sustained during a sporting event. The physician applies hip strapping to provide support, reduce pain, and limit range of motion to allow for healing., A patient with a minor hip dislocation that has been reduced is treated with hip strapping to maintain proper alignment and prevent redislocation., A patient with osteoarthritis of the hip experiences increased pain and instability. The physician applies hip strapping to provide additional support and improve joint stability during daily activities.

* Patient's medical history, including the nature and mechanism of injury or underlying condition.* Physical examination findings, including assessment of hip range of motion, stability, and tenderness.* Documentation of the type and amount of strapping material used.* Precise description of the technique used for strapping application.* Post-procedure instructions given to the patient.

** Supplies such as tape and other materials are reported separately. If a cast or splint is also applied, that service is included with the strapping and does not require additional codes. Subsequent removal and reapplication of strapping is billable separately.
