2025 CPT code 43194

Esophagoscopy, rigid, transoral; with removal of foreign body(s).

When bleeding occurs as a result of an endoscopic procedure, control of bleeding is not reported separately during the same operative session. Esophagoscopy includes examination from the cricopharyngeus muscle (upper esophageal sphincter) to and including the gastroesophageal junction. It may also include examination of the proximal region of the stomach via retroflexion when performed.

Modifiers applicable.

In simple words: The doctor uses a rigid tube with a camera and light to look into the esophagus and remove any objects stuck there.

This code describes a procedure where a rigid esophagoscope (a tubular instrument with a light source and camera) is inserted through the mouth to examine the esophagus and remove any foreign bodies present.

Example 1: A patient presents to the emergency department after swallowing a fish bone that is lodged in their esophagus. The physician performs a rigid esophagoscopy to visualize and remove the bone., A child swallows a coin, which becomes lodged in the esophagus. A rigid esophagoscopy is performed to remove the coin., An adult experiences difficulty swallowing after eating a piece of meat. A rigid esophagoscopy reveals a food bolus obstructing the esophagus, and it is successfully removed.

Documentation should include details of the procedure, including the type and size of the foreign body, the location of the obstruction, the method used for removal, and any complications encountered. The medical necessity for the procedure must also be clearly documented.
