Excision of one or more lesions of the small or large intestine, not requiring anastomosis, exteriorization, or fistulization, through a single enterotomy.
Modifiers such as 22 (Increased Procedural Services), 52 (Reduced Services), and others may be applicable depending on the circumstances of the procedure.
Medical necessity should be documented by the diagnosis necessitating the excision, such as a benign or malignant tumor, polyp, or inflammatory bowel disease. The documentation should indicate why less invasive procedures were not feasible.
In simple words: Removal of one or more abnormal growths from the small or large intestine through a single incision. This procedure does not involve connecting different parts of the intestine, bringing the intestine outside the body, or creating an abnormal connection between the intestine and another organ.
This procedure involves the excision of one or more lesions from the small or large intestine through a single incision. It does not include creating an anastomosis, exteriorizing the intestine, or forming a fistula. The surgeon makes an abdominal incision, locates the affected intestinal segment, and excises the lesion(s) through a single enterotomy (or colotomy if in the colon). The incision is then closed using sutures or staples. Bleeding is controlled, and the abdominal incision is closed.
Example 1: A patient presents with a benign polyp in the sigmoid colon. During a colonoscopy, the polyp cannot be removed safely. The patient undergoes a laparoscopic-assisted excision of the polyp via a single colotomy (44110)., A patient has a small, localized tumor in the small intestine discovered during a diagnostic laparoscopy. The surgeon performs an excision of the tumor through a single enterotomy (44110)., A patient with Crohn's disease has a single, inflamed lesion in the ileum causing obstruction. The surgeon performs a resection of this lesion through a single enterotomy without the need for anastomosis or exteriorization (44110).
- Size and location of lesion(s) - Number of enterotomies performed (should be only one for 44110) - Method of closure (sutures, staples, etc.) - Whether anastomosis, exteriorization, or fistulization was performed (should not be performed for 44110) - Any complications encountered
