Laparoscopic ablation of renal cysts.

Surgical laparoscopy always includes diagnostic laparoscopy. To report a diagnostic laparoscopy (peritoneoscopy) as a separate procedure, use 49320.For chemotherapeutic agents, report both the specific service and the specific substance(s) provided.

Modifiers 50 (Bilateral Procedure), 51 (Multiple Procedures), 59 (Distinct Procedural Service), and others may be applicable depending on the specific circumstances of the procedure.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of symptomatic renal cysts causing pain, hematuria, or impacting kidney function. The procedure is considered medically necessary to alleviate symptoms, improve kidney function, or prevent potential complications.

A surgeon performs this procedure, utilizing imaging guidance to precisely target and destroy renal cysts using either radiofrequency or cryoablation techniques. This requires expertise in laparoscopic surgery and knowledge of renal anatomy.

IMPORTANT:For laparoscopic surgical ablation of renal lesions other than cysts, use 50542.If only a diagnostic laparoscopy is performed, use 49320.

In simple words: This surgery uses small incisions and a special camera to destroy cysts in the kidneys. The doctor uses either freezing or heat to remove the cysts.

Laparoscopic surgical ablation of renal cysts using radiofrequency or cryoablation. The procedure involves creating small incisions, inflating the abdomen with carbon dioxide, inserting a laparoscope and instruments through ports, and using radiofrequency or cryoablation to destroy the renal cysts. The procedure may be guided by imaging.

Example 1: A 45-year-old female patient presents with flank pain and imaging reveals multiple simple renal cysts.Laparoscopic ablation is chosen to alleviate pain and prevent potential complications., A 60-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension and large, symptomatic renal cysts undergoes laparoscopic cryoablation to reduce cyst size and improve kidney function., A 70-year-old female patient with a complex renal cyst causing significant pain and impacting kidney function opts for laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation as a minimally invasive treatment option.

* Preoperative imaging (ultrasound, CT scan) clearly demonstrating the location and size of the renal cysts.* Operative report detailing the approach, technique used (cryoablation or radiofrequency ablation), number of cysts treated, and any complications encountered.* Pathology report (if tissue samples obtained).* Postoperative imaging (if performed) to confirm treatment efficacy.

** This code encompasses ablation of renal cysts via laparoscopy regardless of the method (cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, etc.). Use of this code should be limited to one per session.
