Modifiers may be applicable depending on the circumstances of the procedure.Refer to the official CPT® guidelines and local payer policies for details.

Medical necessity is established when a patient experiences symptoms associated with meatal stenosis, such as a weak or spraying urinary stream, difficulty urinating, or pain during urination. The procedure is deemed medically necessary to improve urinary function and quality of life.

The urologist or surgeon performs the procedure under anesthesia. This includes prepping the patient, making an incision to enlarge the meatus, reconstructing the urethra if necessary, covering the incision with a mucosal flap, placing absorbable sutures, controlling bleeding, and closing the incision in layers. Post-operative care instructions regarding antibiotic ointment application are also provided.

IMPORTANT For meatotomy, see 53020, 53025. For hypospadias, see 54300-54352.

In simple words: This surgery widens the opening of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) at the tip of the penis to improve urine flow. The doctor makes a small cut to widen the opening, and then uses a flap of tissue to cover the cut and stitches to close it.

Urethromeatoplasty with mucosal advancement is a surgical procedure to correct meatal stenosis (narrowing of the urethral opening). The procedure involves enlarging the meatus by incising it, reconstructing any part of the urethra near the meatus, and advancing mucosal tissue to cover the incision.Absorbable sutures are used to close the incision. This procedure addresses issues with urinary stream, and improves the function of the urethra.

Example 1: A 6-year-old boy presents with meatal stenosis causing a weak and spraying urinary stream.Urethromeatoplasty with mucosal advancement is performed to widen the meatal opening and improve urine flow. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia., A 12-year-old boy has significant meatal stenosis secondary to trauma. The urologist performs a urethromeatoplasty with mucosal advancement to reconstruct the narrowed portion of the urethra and enlarge the meatus. This involves removing scar tissue and reshaping the urethra., A newborn with congenital meatal stenosis undergoes urethromeatoplasty with mucosal advancement to correct the narrowed urethral opening at birth. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and specialized instruments are used to minimize the risk of complications.

* Preoperative diagnosis clearly documenting meatal stenosis.* Operative report detailing the surgical technique, including the extent of the meatotomy and any reconstruction performed.* Intraoperative photographs showing the appearance of the meatus before and after the procedure.* Postoperative photographs documenting the healing progress.* Pathology report if tissue samples were taken for examination.
