Vasovasostomy or vasovasorrhaphy.

Modifiers are applicable. Modifier 50 is used for bilateral procedures.

In simple words: This procedure reverses a vasectomy by reconnecting the tubes that carry sperm. A small incision is made in the scrotum, the ends of the vas deferens are sewn together, and the incision is closed.

Vasovasostomy is a surgical procedure to reverse a vasectomy. It involves reconnecting the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) to restore fertility. The procedure may involve a single-layer or double-layer closure of the vas deferens using microsurgical sutures. Dye may be injected to check for tubal patency.

Example 1: A 35-year-old male who had a vasectomy five years prior now desires to have children and undergoes a vasovasostomy., A 40-year-old male undergoes a bilateral vasovasostomy with the use of an operating microscope., A 30-year-old male who had a vasectomy following a divorce now remarries and undergoes a vasovasostomy, but the procedure is discontinued prior to the administration of anesthesia due to patient anxiety.

Documentation should include operative report detailing the procedure performed including unilateral or bilateral, single or double layer closure, use of operating microscope and any complications. Pre-operative consultation notes indicating patient’s desire for fertility restoration should also be included.

** For bilateral procedures, use modifier 50. For procedures performed with an operating microscope, use 69990.
