2025 CPT code 58700

Complete or partial removal of one or both fallopian tubes.

Code 58700 is for a salpingectomy performed via an open abdominal approach and should not be used for laparoscopic or other approaches. Modifier 52 may be used for reduced services if the procedure is less extensive than a standard salpingectomy.

Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to iFrameAI to check.

Medical necessity depends on the specific clinical indication, such as ectopic pregnancy, sterilization, or other pathology affecting the fallopian tubes. Refer to iFrameAI for specific payer requirements.

The surgeon makes an abdominal incision, exposes the fallopian tubes, dissects them from the broad ligament, removes them, controls bleeding, and closes the incision. A Foley catheter may be placed for drainage.

IMPORTANT:For laparoscopic salpingectomy, use 58661. For salpingectomy during a cesarean section, use 58611. For tubal ligation during other intra-abdominal surgeries, also consider 58611. For laparoscopic fulguration of oviducts, use 58670.

In simple words: This procedure involves removing all or part of the fallopian tubes through an incision in the abdomen. It's done when the tubes need to be taken out and isn't part of another procedure like a C-section.

This procedure involves the surgical removal of either a portion or all of one or both fallopian tubes (salpingectomy) performed through an abdominal incision. It is distinct from procedures performed laparoscopically or in conjunction with other procedures like a cesarean section.

Example 1: A patient with an ectopic pregnancy in the fallopian tube requiring removal of the affected tube via an abdominal incision., A patient undergoing sterilization who opts for an abdominal salpingectomy as a permanent birth control method., A patient with a hydrosalpinx (fluid-filled fallopian tube) causing pain or infertility who undergoes an abdominal salpingectomy to resolve the issue.

Documentation should include the reason for the procedure (e.g., ectopic pregnancy, sterilization, hydrosalpinx), operative report detailing the procedure, and any complications encountered.

** For cases involving sterilization, check payer guidelines for required modifiers or documentation. Modifier FP may be required by some payers for family planning purposes.
