Keratomileusis

Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to payer guidelines for specific modifier usage.

In simple words: This procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea and improve vision. The surgeon creates a small flap, reshapes the cornea beneath it, and then closes the flap.

This procedure involves reshaping the cornea to improve vision. After prepping and anesthetizing the patient, a microkeratome creates a hinged flap in the cornea. A laser or other device reshapes the cornea, and the flap is then closed to heal without sutures.

Example 1: A patient with myopia (nearsightedness) undergoes keratomileusis to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses., Following cataract surgery, a patient develops astigmatism. Keratomileusis is performed to correct the astigmatism and improve their vision., A patient with hyperopia (farsightedness) chooses keratomileusis to correct their vision and eliminate the need for reading glasses.

Documentation should include pre-operative eye examinations, measurements of corneal thickness and curvature, type of laser or device used, and post-operative results.

** While often not covered for vision enhancement in healthy individuals, some payers may cover this procedure following cataract surgery, ocular trauma, or corneal transplantation.
