2025 CPT code 70549
Effective Date: N/A Radiology - Diagnostic Radiology Feed
MRA of the neck with and without contrast.
Modifiers 26 and TC are applicable to this code, as are 51, 52, 53, 76, 77, 79, 80, 81, 82, and 99, depending on the circumstances.
Medical necessity is based on the individual patient's clinical presentation.Specific diagnoses or suspected conditions for which this code may be medically necessary include carotid artery dissection, pulsatile neck mass, follow-up after vascular surgery, and other vascular abnormalities.
The patient lies still on a table that slides into the MRI machine. Images are taken without contrast, then contrast is administered, and further images are acquired. The radiologist interprets the images.
In simple words: This is a special type of MRI of the blood vessels in your neck. It's done first without dye and then with dye, to get the clearest pictures possible.
Magnetic resonance angiography of the neck; without contrast material(s), followed by contrast material(s) and further sequences.
Example 1: A patient presents with symptoms suggestive of carotid artery dissection. An MRA neck with and without contrast is ordered to evaluate the carotid arteries., Following surgical intervention on the neck vessels, a follow-up MRA neck with and without contrast is ordered to assess the patency of the vessels., A pulsatile mass is detected in the neck during a physical exam.To further characterize the mass and its relationship to surrounding vasculature, an MRA of the neck with and without contrast is performed.
Documentation should include the reason for the study, relevant history, physical exam findings, and the interpretation of the images.
