2025 CPT code 71250

Computed tomography, thorax, diagnostic; without contrast material.

Modifiers 26 (professional component), TC (technical component), and other relevant modifiers may be applicable depending on the specific circumstances of the service provided.

Medical necessity for this code must be supported by appropriate documentation indicating a clinically valid reason for performing the non-contrast CT scan of the thorax, such as evaluating symptoms, assessing trauma, or monitoring disease progression.

The physician positions the patient, operates the CT scanner, reviews the images, interprets the findings, and generates a report.

IMPORTANT:For CT thorax with contrast, use 71260. For CT thorax without contrast followed by with contrast, use 71270. For low-dose CT for lung cancer screening, use 71271. For limited or localized follow-up CT, use 76380.

In simple words: A CT scan of your chest takes detailed pictures of the inside of your chest, like your lungs and heart. This particular scan is done without using any dye to highlight those areas.

This code represents a diagnostic computed tomography (CT) scan of the thorax (chest) performed without the use of intravenous contrast material. The procedure involves the acquisition of cross-sectional images of the chest using X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed anatomical pictures. It is used to evaluate various conditions affecting the lungs, mediastinum, and chest wall.

Example 1: A patient presents with shortness of breath and cough. A non-contrast CT scan of the chest is ordered to evaluate for possible pneumonia, emphysema, or other lung abnormalities., Following a blunt trauma to the chest, a non-contrast CT scan is performed to assess for rib fractures or other injuries, particularly if there is no concern for vascular injury., A patient with a history of kidney disease requires evaluation of a lung nodule. A non-contrast CT scan is ordered due to the contraindication for intravenous contrast.

Documentation should include the reason for the CT scan, relevant patient history, clinical findings, and the interpretation of the CT images.
