Radiologic examination, scapula, complete.
Modifiers 26 (professional component) and TC (technical component) can be used with this code when appropriate. Modifier 50 (bilateral procedure) can be used for X-rays of both scapulae. Other modifiers, such as 52 (reduced services) or 76, 77, and 79 (repeat procedures) may also be applicable depending on the circumstances.
The provider positions the patient and obtains the necessary X-ray images. Typically, a radiologic technician performs the procedure under the supervision of a physician, who interprets the images.
In simple words: A complete X-ray of your shoulder blade is taken to check for breaks, injuries, arthritis, bone spurs, growths, or birth defects. The X-ray is taken from the front to back and from the side.
This code represents a complete X-ray examination of the scapula (shoulder blade). It includes anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views to assess for fractures, injuries, arthritis, bone spurs, tumors, or congenital abnormalities.
Example 1: A patient presents to the emergency room after falling on their shoulder. A complete scapula X-ray (73010) is ordered to assess for a possible fracture., A patient with chronic shoulder pain and limited range of motion is referred for a scapula X-ray (73010) to evaluate for arthritis or bone spurs., A patient with a suspected tumor in the shoulder area undergoes a scapula X-ray (73010) as part of the diagnostic workup.
Documentation should include the reason for the examination, the patient's symptoms, the views taken (AP and lateral), the radiologist's interpretation of the images, and any relevant diagnoses.
- Modifier TC rule: Modifier TC is applicable when only the technical component of the procedure is being billed, such as by a portable X-ray supplier. Hospitals may be exempt from appending modifier TC.
