Intraoperative epicardial cardiac ultrasound for congenital heart disease, interpretation and report only.

This code should only be used for the interpretation and report of intraoperative epicardial cardiac ultrasound for congenital heart disease when the physician providing the interpretation did not perform the image acquisition. All diagnostic ultrasound examinations require permanently recorded images with measurements, when such measurements are clinically indicated. For those codes whose sole diagnostic goal is a biometric measure (e.g., 76514, 76516, and 76519), permanently recorded images are not required. A final, written report should be issued for inclusion in the patient's medical record.

Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to specific payer guidelines.

Medical necessity should be established by the diagnosis of congenital heart disease requiring intraoperative assessment with epicardial cardiac ultrasound.

A physician or other qualified healthcare professional interprets the intraoperative epicardial cardiac ultrasound images and creates a report detailing the findings.

IMPORTANT:For a complete service including image acquisition, use 76987. For placement, transducer manipulation, and image acquisition only, use 76988. Do not report 76989 in conjunction with 76998 (Ultrasonic guidance, intraoperative).
