Barbiturates, Definitive Drug Class

This code is used for definitive drug testing. Presumptive testing (e.g., immunoassays) is reported separately. If multiple drug classes are tested, each definitive drug class is reported with the appropriate code. The code is selected based on the number of reported analytes within the drug class, not the capacity of the analysis. Metabolites not listed in the Definitive Drug Classes Listing should be reported using the parent drug code, unless the metabolite is specifically listed separately.

Modifiers may be applicable, such as modifier 91 (repeat clinical diagnostic laboratory test) or modifier 59 (distinct procedural service) when performed on multiple specimens from the same patient on the same day.

Medical necessity must be established for this test. This typically involves documentation supporting the clinical indication for barbiturate testing, such as suspicion of overdose, monitoring therapeutic levels, or other relevant clinical scenarios.

The laboratory analyst performs the test using methods like gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). This involves analyzing the sample to identify and quantify the presence of barbiturates.

In simple words: This test checks for the presence and/or level of barbiturates, a type of sedative drug, in your body. It's usually done on a urine or blood sample. The test can tell if the drug is present, and if so, how much is there.

This code represents a definitive drug class procedure for barbiturates. It is used to identify the presence or measure the levels of barbiturates in a patient sample, typically serum or urine. The test may be qualitative, quantitative, or a combination of both. This method can distinguish between structural isomers but not necessarily stereoisomers.

Example 1: A patient is suspected of a barbiturate overdose. A definitive drug test is ordered to confirm the presence and level of barbiturates to guide treatment., A patient with epilepsy is prescribed barbiturates to control seizures. Regular testing is performed to monitor therapeutic levels and ensure medication compliance., A patient undergoing surgery is given barbiturates as part of the anesthesia. Post-operative testing may be performed to monitor drug clearance.

Documentation should include the reason for testing (e.g., overdose, therapeutic monitoring), the type of specimen collected (e.g., urine, serum), the date and time of collection, and the ordering physician.
