2025 CPT code 93005

Records the electrical activity of the heart using 12 leads, providing the tracing only, without interpretation or report.

Use 93005 when only the tracing is performed without interpretation. If the same provider performs both tracing and interpretation, use 93000. If another provider performs the interpretation, use 93010.

Modifiers may be applicable in specific circumstances. Refer to current CPT guidelines.

Medical necessity must be documented based on the patient's symptoms or condition requiring an ECG, such as chest pain, palpitations, or pre-operative assessment.

The clinician places electrodes on the patient's chest, arms, and legs and operates the ECG machine to obtain the tracing. They do not interpret the results or provide a report.

IMPORTANT:For interpretation and report only, use 93010. For both tracing and interpretation/report, use 93000.

In simple words: This is for recording your heart's electrical activity using a machine with 12 sensors, but it doesn't include a doctor explaining the results.

This code represents the technical component of a routine electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) using at least 12 leads. It involves placing electrodes on the patient's chest, arms, and legs to capture the heart's electrical signals and produce a tracing. This code does not include the interpretation of the tracing or a report, which are billed separately under 93010.

Example 1: A patient presents with chest pain, and an ECG is ordered to rule out a heart attack. The tracing is performed by a technician, and a cardiologist will interpret it later., A patient with a history of arrhythmia experiences palpitations. An ECG tracing is performed to assess the current heart rhythm, with a separate physician interpreting the results., A patient is scheduled for surgery and requires a pre-operative ECG. A technician obtains the ECG tracing, which is sent to the patient's primary care physician for review.

Order for the ECG, date and time of the ECG, and the tracing itself.
