Complete transthoracic echocardiogram without spectral or color Doppler.
Modifiers 26 (professional component), 51 (multiple procedures), and other standard modifiers may be applicable depending on the circumstances.
Medical necessity must be established for all echocardiograms. The documentation should clearly indicate the clinical reason for the study.
The physician prepares the patient, applies gel, and positions the transducer on the chest to obtain images from various standard views (subcostal, apical, parasternal, suprasternal). They interpret the images, record measurements, and document any unvisualized structures.M-mode recording may be used to assess heart motion and blood volume.
In simple words: This is a detailed ultrasound of your heart, done through your chest. It creates pictures of your heart's chambers, valves, and how blood flows through them. It also checks the sac around your heart and the main artery leaving your heart. It doesn't use Doppler to measure blood flow speed.
Comprehensive transthoracic echocardiogram using 2D and, when performed, selected M-mode examination of the heart (left and right atria and ventricles), valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid), pericardium, and adjacent aorta. Multiple views are required for complete evaluation, with measurements recorded. Documentation of any unvisualized structures is necessary. Includes visualization of additional structures like pulmonary veins, artery, pulmonic valve, and inferior vena cava when possible.
Example 1: A patient presents with shortness of breath and suspected valve disease. A complete transthoracic echocardiogram (93307) is performed to assess the structure and function of the heart valves., A patient with a history of heart attack is scheduled for a follow-up echocardiogram to evaluate the overall heart function and identify any new abnormalities., A patient with chest pain undergoes a 93307 to rule out pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart).
Documentation should include images, measurements of heart structures, a description of any abnormalities, and the reason for any unvisualized structures. A final written report is required.
- Modifier TC rule: Modifier TC (technical component) is applicable if only the technical component is performed.
