2025 CPT code 93584
(New) Effective Date: N/A Revision Date: N/A Deletion Date: N/A Cardiac Catheterization - Venography Medicine/Cardiovascular/Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Defects Feed
Venography of an anomalous or persistent superior vena cava (SVC) during a cardiac catheterization for congenital heart defects; includes catheter placement, injection, and radiological supervision and interpretation.
Modifiers may be applicable depending on the specific circumstances of the procedure. Refer to the CPT manual for guidance on modifier usage.
The medical necessity for 93584 is established by the presence of a suspected or confirmed anomalous or persistent SVC in the context of a congenital heart defect, and the need for venography to further characterize the defect for appropriate management.
The physician or qualified healthcare professional is responsible for catheter placement in the anomalous SVC, contrast injection, image acquisition, interpretation, and report generation.
- Medicine/Cardiovascular/Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Defects
- Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Defects; Add-on codes for Venography
In simple words: This test uses X-rays and a special dye injected through a catheter to take pictures of a vein in the chest (superior vena cava or SVC) that is not in its usual place,or is an extra vein. This is done during another heart test (cardiac catheterization) to examine the heart. It includes the placement of the catheter, injection of dye, taking images and reviewing these.
This add-on code reports venography of an anomalous or persistent superior vena cava (SVC) performed during a cardiac catheterization procedure for congenital heart defects. The procedure involves selective catheter placement in the anomalous SVC (a second SVC located on the opposite side of the chest from the primary SVC), contrast injection, image acquisition, and radiological supervision and interpretation. This code is used in conjunction with other codes for the primary congenital heart catheterization.
Example 1: A patient with a diagnosis of dextrocardia undergoes cardiac catheterization to evaluate a suspected congenital heart defect. During the procedure, an anomalous left SVC is identified, and 93584 is reported in addition to the primary cardiac catheterization code., A patient with Tetralogy of Fallot presents for cardiac catheterization.During the procedure, an anomalous right SVC is identified and the venogram is performed using 93584 in addition to the primary code., A patient with a history of previous heart surgery undergoes cardiac catheterization to assess for residual abnormalities.Anomalous venous structures are suspected, requiring venography for accurate assessment of the patient's current condition; 93584 is used in addition to the primary catheterization code.
Detailed documentation should include the indication for the procedure, the specific venous structure imaged (anomalous or persistent SVC), catheter placement details, imaging findings, and interpretation. The report must include the relevant anatomical description and the images.
** This code is intended only for venography of an anomalous or persistent SVC identified during cardiac catheterization for congenital heart defects. It does not encompass venography of other venous structures.
