2025 CPT code 93931

Duplex scan of upper extremity arteries or arterial bypass grafts; unilateral or limited study.

Do not report 93931 in conjunction with 93985 or 93986 for the same extremity.

Modifiers may be applicable to indicate specific circumstances, such as the use of a technical component (TC) or professional component (26).

Medical necessity must be established by the patient's symptoms and clinical presentation. The duplex scan should be ordered when there is clinical suspicion of arterial insufficiency or other vascular abnormalities in the upper extremity.

In simple words: This procedure uses ultrasound to create images of the arteries in one of your arms to check blood flow and look for blockages. It's a non-invasive procedure that typically takes about 30 minutes.

This code represents a duplex ultrasound scan of the arteries or arterial bypass grafts in one upper extremity. It is considered a limited study and includes the physician's interpretation of the results. A duplex scan combines traditional ultrasound with Doppler ultrasound to create images and assess blood flow.

Example 1: A patient presents with symptoms of arm claudication. A limited duplex scan of the affected arm is performed to assess arterial blood flow., A patient has a history of an arterial bypass graft in their left arm. A duplex scan is ordered to monitor the graft's patency., A patient experiences sudden coldness and numbness in their right hand. A limited duplex scan of the right arm is performed to evaluate for arterial occlusion.

Documentation should include the reason for the study, the specific area examined, the findings of the duplex scan including images and waveforms, and the physician's interpretation.
