2025 CPT code 97814

Additional 15 minutes of acupuncture with electrical stimulation, including needle re-insertion.

Acupuncture codes are reported based on 15-minute increments of face-to-face patient contact, not the duration of needle placement. Only one code may be reported per 15-minute increment.Modifier 25 may be appended to an E/M service if significant, separately identifiable E/M services are performed beyond the usual preservice and postservice work associated with acupuncture.

Modifiers 53, 58, 76, 77, 78, 79, 99, may be applicable depending on the circumstances of the service provided.Consult the AMA CPT manual for appropriate use of modifiers.

Medical necessity for acupuncture with electrical stimulation would be established through a thorough history and physical examination, documenting the patient's diagnosis, symptoms, and the rationale for selecting electroacupuncture as a treatment modality. The documentation should justify that the treatment is reasonable and necessary for the patient's medical condition and expected to improve the patient's condition.

The provider inserts, manipulates, and electrically stimulates needles at specific points on the patient's body. The provider monitors the patient's response, readjusts needles and electrical stimulation as needed, throughout the treatment session.

IMPORTANT:Use with 97810 or 97813.Do not report with 20560 or 20561.If both time-based acupuncture and needle insertion without injection are performed, only report the time-based codes.

In simple words: This code covers extra time spent on acupuncture treatment with electrical stimulation. It's for each additional 15 minutes beyond the initial treatment, and includes times when needles are put back in.This type of acupuncture uses a small electrical current to stimulate the needles.

This CPT code represents each additional 15-minute period of one-on-one patient contact involving acupuncture with electrical stimulation. It includes the re-insertion of needles. This code is reported in addition to the initial acupuncture code (97810 or 97813) and is only used when electrical stimulation is employed during the additional 15-minute increment. The time spent on the E/M service is not included in this acupuncture time.

Example 1: A patient presents with chronic lower back pain. The physician performs an initial 15-minute acupuncture session with electrical stimulation (97813).Due to the patient's response and the complexity of the pain management, the physician continues the treatment with additional 15-minute increments of electrical stimulation (97814) for a total of 45 minutes of treatment., A patient recovering from a stroke is receiving acupuncture treatments to improve motor function in their affected limb. The initial treatment includes electrical stimulation (97813), and subsequent sessions necessitate the use of additional 15-minute blocks of electroacupuncture (97814) to target specific muscle groups., A patient experiencing post-surgical nausea undergoes an initial acupuncture session with electrical stimulation (97813) for nausea relief. Following the initial session, due to persistent nausea, an additional 15 minutes of electrical stimulation acupuncture is performed (97814).

Detailed documentation should include the location of needle insertions, type of stimulation used (frequency, intensity), patient's response to the treatment, and any adverse effects. The total time spent on the procedure, broken down into 15-minute increments, should be clearly documented.Progress notes should reflect the rationale for using electroacupuncture and its effectiveness in managing the patient's condition.

** This code should only be used when electrical stimulation is employed. The initial 15-minute increment requires 97810 or 97813, depending on whether electrical stimulation was used. Subsequent 15-minute increments would use 97811 or 97814 respectively.Always refer to the most current CPT manual for accurate coding guidelines.
