Breast biopsy using magnetic resonance guidance.
Modifiers such as LT (left side) or RT (right side) can be used to specify the side of the body on which the procedure was performed. Modifiers 22 (increased procedural services) or 52 (reduced services) may be appropriate in certain situations.
Medical necessity for MR-guided breast biopsy is established when other imaging modalities (mammography and ultrasound) are inconclusive or when the lesion is only visible on MRI. It may also be necessary for patients with contraindications to other biopsy methods.
The provider uses magnetic resonance (MR) guidance to locate the breast lesion. A small incision is made, and a minimally invasive percutaneous approach is used to remove the target breast tissue. Localization devices may be placed, and the specimen may be imaged. The incision is then closed.
In simple words: The doctor uses a special MRI machine to guide a needle into your breast to take a small tissue sample. This sample is then examined under a microscope. Sometimes, a small marker is left in place to help locate the area for future procedures.
Using magnetic resonance guidance, the provider uses a percutaneous approach to obtain breast tissue for biopsy. The procedure may include placement of one or more localization devices and imaging of the biopsy specimen.
Example 1: A patient presents with a suspicious breast lump detected on mammography. Due to the lump's location, MR-guided biopsy is determined to be the most appropriate method for obtaining a tissue sample., A patient has an abnormality detected on breast MRI that is not clearly visible on mammography or ultrasound. An MR-guided biopsy is performed to obtain a tissue diagnosis., A patient has a known breast cancer and an MR-guided biopsy is performed to assess the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
Documentation should include the indication for the biopsy, the location and size of the lesion, the method of localization, the number of specimens obtained, and any complications encountered. Pre and Post biopsy imaging should also be documented.
** Code C7502 is specific to MR-guided biopsies. Other imaging guidance methods use different codes (e.g., stereotactic, ultrasound).
