2025 HCPCS code RB

Modifier used to indicate the replacement of a part of a DMEPOS item as part of a repair.

Refer to the HCPCS Level II coding guidelines for proper use of modifiers.

No additional modifiers are applicable with modifier RB

Medical necessity for the repair of the DMEPOS item must be established. The documentation should support the need for the repair to restore the function of the equipment for the patient's medical condition.

The supplier is responsible for documenting the details of the repair, including the time spent on the repair, the HCPCS code of the base equipment, proof of patient ownership, and the date the equipment was acquired by the patient.

IMPORTANT:Use modifier RA if the entire DMEPOS item is replaced.

In simple words: When a part of your medical equipment is broken, and the supplier replaces that part to fix the equipment, the supplier uses the "RB" modifier on the bill. This modifier applies only when you own the equipment.

This modifier is appended to the HCPCS code for the replacement part to indicate that the supplier furnished a new replacement part for a damaged or worn-out part of a DMEPOS item that the beneficiary owns. The replacement part is furnished to repair the DMEPOS item.If the entire DMEPOS item is replaced, modifier RA should be used instead.

Example 1: A patient owns a wheelchair and the wheel breaks. The supplier replaces the broken wheel and uses modifier RB with the HCPCS code for the wheel., A patient's CPAP machine has a faulty motor. The supplier replaces the motor to repair the machine. Modifier RB appended to the motor's HCPCS code signifies that only the motor was replaced, as opposed to purchasing a new CPAP machine., A patient’s oxygen concentrator malfunctions, and the supplier replaces the concentrator's filter as a repair. The filter's HCPCS code is billed with modifier RB appended to clarify that it was a repair of the existing oxygen concentrator.

** It is important to note that the use of modifier RB is specific to situations where the beneficiary owns the DMEPOS item being repaired.Rental DMEPOS typically includes repairs and maintenance in the rental fee, and modifier RB would not be applicable.
