2025 ICD-10-CM code D14.1

Benign neoplasm of the larynx.

Use additional codes to identify any functional activity associated with the neoplasm.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of symptoms, functional impairment, or risk of complications due to the laryngeal neoplasm. The documentation should support the need for diagnostic procedures and/or treatment.

Providers diagnose the condition based on the patient’s history and physical examination. The provider may perform direct or indirect laryngoscopy and excisional biopsy of the lesion for microscopic analysis. X–ray, MRI, and CT scan of head and neck help diagnose and plan treatment. Some benign tumors do not require treatment, but when necessary, surgical removal is usually the treatment of choice.

In simple words: A non-cancerous growth in the voice box (larynx).

Benign (noncancerous) neoplasm of the larynx (part of the respiratory system that produces the voice and helps in swallowing and breathing; also called voice box) refers to a mass of abnormal cells that lacks the ability to penetrate neighboring tissues (metastasize). Benign tumors occur due to polyps, smoking, and chronic and viral respiratory infections.

Example 1: A patient presents with hoarseness and difficulty swallowing. Upon examination, a benign polyp is found on the vocal cord., A patient with a history of smoking experiences persistent throat irritation. A benign tumor is discovered in the larynx during a laryngoscopy., A child with recurrent respiratory infections develops a benign growth in the larynx, causing breathing difficulties.

Documentation should include the patient's symptoms, physical examination findings, imaging results (if applicable), and biopsy results confirming the benign nature of the neoplasm. Details of laryngoscopy procedure (direct or indirect) should also be documented.

** Excludes1: benign neoplasm of epiglottis, anterior aspect (D10.5) and polyp (nonadenomatous) of vocal cord or larynx (J38.1).
