2025 ICD-10-CM code E36.1

Accidental puncture and laceration of an endocrine system organ or structure during a procedure.

This is a secondary code and should not be used as the primary diagnosis. Use additional codes to describe the underlying condition necessitating the procedure, the procedure itself and subsequent repair procedures if required.

The medical necessity of any additional procedures or treatments required to address the accidental puncture or laceration must be documented.

The provider performing the procedure is responsible for documenting the accidental puncture or laceration and any subsequent treatment or repair.

IMPORTANT:If the procedure was on an endocrine system organ or structure, use E36.11. If the procedure was on another organ or structure, use E36.12.

In simple words: This code indicates that an endocrine organ (like the thyroid or pancreas) was accidentally punctured or cut during a medical procedure. This could happen during surgery on the endocrine organ itself or during surgery on a nearby organ.

This code describes an accidental puncture and/or laceration of an organ or structure within the endocrine system that occurs during a surgical or medical procedure. The endocrine system includes organs like the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, pancreas, and others. This complication can occur during a procedure directly involving the endocrine system or during a procedure on a different organ system.

Example 1: A patient undergoing a thyroidectomy accidentally has their parathyroid gland punctured during the procedure., During a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), the surgeon accidentally nicks the patient's pancreas., A patient undergoing a biopsy of a neck mass has their thyroid gland accidentally lacerated during the needle insertion.

Documentation should clearly indicate the specific organ or structure that was punctured or lacerated, the procedure during which the complication occurred, and any resulting treatment provided, such as repair or additional surgery.

** For more detailed coding, use E36.11 if the puncture or laceration occurred during a procedure on the endocrine system, or E36.12 if it occurred during a procedure on another organ system.
