2025 ICD-10-CM code H22

Disorders of iris and ciliary body in diseases classified elsewhere. Code first underlying disease.

Code the underlying disease first. H22 is used as a secondary code to indicate the manifestation in the eye.

Medical necessity is established by the diagnosis and documentation of both the underlying disease and the resulting disorder of the iris and ciliary body. The documentation should support the connection between the two conditions.

The clinician is responsible for identifying and coding the underlying disease causing the disorder of the iris and ciliary body, and then coding H22 to represent the eye manifestation.

In simple words: This code represents problems with the iris (the colored part of your eye) and ciliary body (which helps control focusing) due to another health issue. It's important to also code the underlying disease causing these eye problems.

Disorders of iris and ciliary body in diseases classified elsewhere. Code first underlying disease, such as: gout (M1A.-, M10.-) leprosy (A30.-) parasitic disease (B89)

Example 1: A patient with diagnosed gout (M1A.9) presents with iritis. The physician would code M1A.9 for the gout and H22 for the iritis related to the gout., A patient with leprosy (A30.0) develops cyclitis. The physician codes A30.0 for the leprosy and H22 for the cyclitis caused by the leprosy. , A patient with a parasitic infection (B89) experiences anterior uveitis. The physician documents B89 for the parasitic infection and H22 for the anterior uveitis due to the infection.

Documentation should clearly link the iris and ciliary body disorder to the underlying disease. The underlying disease should be clearly diagnosed and documented. The specific type of iris and ciliary body disorder (e.g., iritis, cyclitis, anterior uveitis) should also be documented.

** Excludes2: certain conditions originating in the perinatal period (P04-P96), certain infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99), complications of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium (O00-O9A), congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities (Q00-Q99), diabetes mellitus related eye conditions (E09.3-, E10.3-, E11.3-, E13.3-), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E88), injury (trauma) of eye and orbit (S05.-), injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes (S00-T88), neoplasms (C00-D49), symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified (R00-R94), syphilis related eye disorders (A50.01, A50.3-, A51.43, A52.71)
