2025 ICD-10-CM code H95.2

Intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma of ear and mastoid process complicating a procedure.

Do not use this code for hemorrhage/hematoma caused by accidental puncture or laceration. Use an external cause code following this code, if applicable.

The medical necessity of addressing the intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma should be documented, including any interventions performed to control the bleeding and manage the hematoma.

It is the clinician's responsibility to accurately document the occurrence of intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma and differentiate it from hemorrhage/hematoma caused by accidental puncture or laceration.

IMPORTANT:Use H95.3- for intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma due to accidental puncture or laceration during a procedure. An external cause code should be used following this code, if applicable, to identify the cause of the ear condition.

In simple words: Bleeding and bruising within the ear and the bone behind it during an ear operation.

Intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma of ear and mastoid process complicating a procedure. This code excludes intraoperative hemorrhage and hematoma due to accidental puncture or laceration during a procedure (H95.3-).

Example 1: A patient undergoing a mastoidectomy experiences significant bleeding and hematoma formation within the mastoid cavity during the procedure., During a tympanoplasty, the surgeon encounters unexpected bleeding and hematoma formation in the middle ear., A patient undergoing cochlear implant surgery develops a hematoma around the implant site during the operation.

Documentation should clearly indicate the presence of hemorrhage and hematoma, the specific location (ear/mastoid), and that it occurred intraoperatively as a complication of the procedure. It must also be distinguished from hemorrhage/hematoma due to accidental puncture or laceration.
