2025 ICD-10-CM code P00

Newborn affected by maternal conditions that may be unrelated to present pregnancy. Code first any current condition in newborn.

This code is to be used on the newborn's record only, not the mother's record. It is important to code any current condition the newborn is experiencing first, followed by P00. Do not use this code for maternal complications of pregnancy (P01.-), maternal endocrine and metabolic disorders (P70-P74), exposure to noxious substances via placenta or breast milk (P04.-), or encounter for observation for suspected diseases and conditions ruled out (Z05.-).

Medical necessity is established by the newborn's condition and the determination that the maternal condition is impacting the newborn's health.Supporting documentation should justify the need for treatment and care related to the newborn's condition.

The physician is responsible for assessing the newborn's condition, determining the impact of the maternal condition, and providing appropriate treatment and care.

In simple words: This code indicates that the newborn has a health issue due to the mother’s health, but not directly related to the pregnancy itself.

This code is used when a newborn is affected by a maternal condition unrelated to the current pregnancy. It is important to code any current condition the newborn is experiencing first.

Example 1: A newborn presents with jaundice shortly after birth. The mother has a history of autoimmune hepatitis which is determined to be contributing to the newborn's jaundice. The newborn's jaundice would be coded first, followed by P00 to indicate the maternal condition's influence., A newborn is small for gestational age. The mother has chronic hypertension, which may have contributed to the infant's growth restriction. The newborn's low birth weight would be coded first, followed by P00 to indicate the potential impact of the maternal hypertension., A newborn experiences withdrawal symptoms shortly after birth. The mother has a history of substance abuse that predates the pregnancy. The specific withdrawal symptoms would be coded first, followed by P00 to indicate the maternal condition's role.

Documentation should clearly link the newborn's condition to the pre-existing maternal condition. The maternal condition should be documented as unrelated to the present pregnancy. The newborn’s symptoms and related diagnosis should be clearly documented.

** This code is for use on the newborn record only, not the maternal record. This code should not be used if the maternal condition is directly related to the pregnancy.
