2025 ICD-10-CM code P24

Neonatal aspiration. Includes: aspiration in utero and during delivery

This code is only applicable to newborn records and should not be used on maternal records.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of respiratory distress or other complications resulting from aspiration. Treatment is necessary to maintain adequate oxygenation and ventilation.

The clinician is responsible for assessing the newborn's respiratory status, identifying any signs of aspiration, and providing appropriate interventions, including airway management and respiratory support.

In simple words: A newborn has inhaled fluid or other substances into their lungs before, during, or shortly after birth.

Neonatal aspiration encompasses any aspiration event occurring in utero or during the delivery process.

Example 1: A newborn aspirates meconium in utero, leading to respiratory distress after birth., During delivery, a newborn aspirates amniotic fluid, requiring suctioning and observation., Shortly after birth, a newborn aspirates milk during feeding, resulting in coughing and choking.

Documentation should include the timing and nature of the aspiration, the substance aspirated (e.g., meconium, amniotic fluid, milk), and the newborn's respiratory status before, during, and after the event. Any interventions performed, such as suctioning or respiratory support, should also be documented.
