2025 ICD-10-CM code P28.31

Primary central sleep apnea of newborn.

This code is for use on newborn records only, not on maternal records. It should not be used if the apnea is due to another identified cause (e.g., prematurity, infection).

Medical necessity is established by the presence of central sleep apnea confirmed by diagnostic testing and impacting the newborn's respiratory status.

Assessment, diagnosis, and management of the newborn with central sleep apnea.

IMPORTANT:Excludes2: other apnea of newborn (P28.4-)

In simple words: A newborn's breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep due to a problem in the brain's breathing control center.

Primary central sleep apnea of newborn. This code is specific to newborns and should not be used for maternal records.

Example 1: A full-term newborn exhibits episodes of apnea during sleep, confirmed by polysomnography to be central sleep apnea., A preterm infant in the NICU demonstrates prolonged pauses in breathing, diagnosed as central sleep apnea after appropriate evaluation., A newborn with a history of maternal opioid use presents with irregular breathing patterns, consistent with primary central sleep apnea.

Documentation should include a thorough clinical examination, details of the apnea episodes (frequency, duration), and results of any diagnostic tests (e.g., polysomnography, blood gas analysis). The underlying cause, if known, should also be documented.
