2025 ICD-10-CM code Q35.1

Cleft hard palate.

Medical necessity for treatment is determined by the severity of the cleft and its impact on feeding, speech, and hearing.

In simple words: A birth defect where the roof of the mouth doesn't fully close, leaving a gap in the hard palate.

A congenital fissure in the midline of the hard palate resulting from the failure of the two sides of the palate to fuse during embryonic development.

Example 1: A newborn is examined and found to have a cleft involving only the hard palate., A 2-year-old child presents with difficulties in speech and eating due to a previously diagnosed cleft hard palate., A fetus is diagnosed with a cleft hard palate during a prenatal ultrasound.

Documentation should specify the extent of the cleft and whether it involves the hard palate only or extends to the soft palate.

** Excludes1: cleft palate with cleft lip (Q37.-)Excludes2: Robin's syndrome (Q87.0)
