2025 ICD-10-CM code T21.19

First-degree burn of other parts of the trunk.

Use an additional external cause code to specify the cause of the burn. If multiple burns are present, code each burn separately. Use additional code to identify any retained foreign body, if applicable (Z18.-)

Medical necessity is determined by the severity and extent of the burn, the patient's overall health condition, and the potential for complications.

Assessment and initial management of the burn, determining the extent and depth of the injury, pain management, and providing appropriate wound care. May involve referral to specialized burn centers for more severe cases.

In simple words: A mild burn affecting an area of the torso, excluding specific regions like the chest, abdomen, back, buttocks, or genitals.

First-degree burn involving areas of the trunk other than the chest wall, abdominal wall, upper back, lower back, buttock, male genital region, or female genital region. This excludes burns of the axilla (T22.-) and requires an additional external cause code (X00-X19, X75-X77, X96-X98, Y92).

Example 1: A patient presents with mild sunburn across the flank, diagnosed as a first-degree burn., A patient accidentally splashes hot coffee on their side, resulting in a first-degree burn., A patient sustains a first-degree burn on their hip area due to prolonged contact with a heating pad.

Detailed description of the burn's location, size, and depth. Documentation of associated symptoms, such as pain, redness, or swelling. The cause and circumstances of the burn should also be recorded.

** Distinguishing "other site of trunk" is crucial. Ensure appropriate documentation to support medical necessity for treatment.Always include an external cause code describing the origin of the burn (e.g., contact with hot object, scald).
