2025 ICD-10-CM code T53.4X2

Toxic effect of dichloromethane, intentional self-harm.

When no intent is indicated, code to accidental. Undetermined intent is only for use when there is specific documentation in the record that the intent of the toxic effect cannot be determined.

Medical necessity is established by the documented evidence of a toxic effect resulting from intentional self-harm with dichloromethane. Treatment provided should address the immediate effects of the poisoning and any subsequent physical or psychological complications.

IMPORTANT: Use additional code(s) from Chapter 20, External causes of morbidity, to indicate the cause of injury. Use additional code to identify any retained foreign body, if applicable (Z18.-). Use additional code(s) for all associated manifestations of the toxic effect, such as respiratory conditions due to external agents (J60-J70). Use additional code for personal history of foreign body fully removed (Z87.821).

In simple words: This code represents self-poisoning with dichloromethane.

Toxic effect of dichloromethane, intentional self-harm. This code is used to document a toxic effect resulting from exposure to dichloromethane, where the intent was self-harm.

Example 1: A patient intentionally ingests dichloromethane in a suicide attempt and presents to the emergency room with symptoms of poisoning., A patient is found unresponsive with an empty bottle of dichloromethane beside them and a suicide note, indicating intentional self-harm., A patient admits to deliberately inhaling dichloromethane to harm themselves and experiences adverse effects requiring medical attention.

Documentation should clearly state the intent of self-harm related to dichloromethane exposure. Details about the method of exposure (ingestion, inhalation, etc.), the quantity of the substance involved (if known), and the resulting clinical manifestations should be documented.

** Excludes1: birth trauma (P10-P15), obstetric trauma (O70-O71), contact with and (suspected) exposure to toxic substances (Z77.-)
