2025 ICD-10-CM code V94.0

Hitting an object or the bottom of a body of water after falling from a watercraft.

This code should be used in conjunction with codes from Chapter 19 (Injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes) to specify the nature of the injury sustained.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of injuries sustained as a direct result of the fall from the watercraft and subsequent impact. The severity of the injuries will determine the need for specific medical interventions.

The clinical responsibility will vary depending on the nature and severity of the injuries sustained. It may include initial assessment and stabilization by emergency medical services, further evaluation and treatment by physicians, and/or rehabilitation services.

IMPORTANT:Consider using additional codes to specify the type of injury sustained (from Chapter 19) and the circumstances surrounding the accident (from Chapter 20).

In simple words: This code is used when someone falls from a boat, ship, or other watercraft and hits something in the water (like a rock or the bottom) or the water itself causing injury. It does not include cases where the person drowns.

This code classifies injuries sustained from hitting an object or the bottom of a body of water after falling from a watercraft. It excludes drowning and submersion due to a fall from a watercraft (V92.0-), and military watercraft accidents in military or war operations (Y36, Y37).

Example 1: A patient falls overboard from a small motorboat and strikes their head on a submerged rock, resulting in a skull fracture and concussion., A passenger on a ferry loses their balance and falls, striking their arm on a railing, causing a fracture., A child falls from a kayak and hits their leg on the bottom of a shallow lake, sustaining a deep laceration requiring stitches.

Detailed documentation should include the circumstances of the fall (e.g., type of watercraft, weather conditions), the nature of the impact (e.g., object struck, water depth), and a complete description of the resulting injuries.

** This code is part of a broader classification system for external causes of morbidity and should be applied accurately to reflect the specifics of the event.
