2025 ICD-10-CM code Z30.8

Encounter for other contraceptive management. This includes encounters for postvasectomy sperm count and routine contraceptive maintenance examinations.

A corresponding procedure code must accompany a Z code if a procedure is performed. Z codes are used when circumstances other than a disease, injury, or external cause are the reason for the encounter.

Medical necessity for the encounter should be established based on the patient's individual needs and circumstances related to contraceptive management.

The clinician is responsible for providing or overseeing contraceptive management services, which may include counseling, examinations, and ordering tests.

In simple words: This code is used for visits related to birth control, other than starting a new method, checking an existing method like an IUD, or getting sterilized. It could be for things like a checkup to make sure your birth control is working or a sperm count after a vasectomy.

Encounter for other contraceptive management. This includes encounters such as postvasectomy sperm counts and routine examinations for contraceptive maintenance.Excludes sperm count following sterilization reversal (Z31.42) and sperm count for fertility testing (Z31.41).

Example 1: A patient presents for a follow-up appointment to discuss the effectiveness of their current contraceptive method., A patient who underwent a vasectomy presents for a semen analysis to confirm sterility., A patient presents for a routine examination to ensure their IUD is properly positioned.

Documentation should support the reason for the encounter related to contraceptive management and may include details of the discussion, examination findings, and any tests ordered or performed.

** This code is not to be used for initial prescription or surveillance of specific contraceptive methods, which have their own designated codes (Z30.011-Z30.019, Z30.41-Z30.49). It is also not to be used for sterilization (Z30.2) or menstrual extraction (Z30.3).If a procedure is performed during the encounter, a corresponding procedure code must also be reported.
