2025 ICD-10-CM code Z96

Presence of other functional implants.

This code is used only when no more specific code is available for the type of implant present. The use of this code should be avoided if a more specific code from the Z96.0-Z96.9 series is available.

The medical necessity for coding Z96 is established by the presence of a functional implant requiring documentation in the patient's medical record. This may be for tracking purposes, monitoring the implant's function, or for assessment of any complications.

Documentation of the presence of the functional implant. This may be part of a routine check-up or in relation to other procedures or conditions.

IMPORTANT:More specific codes (Z96.0-Z96.9) exist for certain types of functional implants.Use these more specific codes if applicable.

In simple words: This code means the patient has a medical implant that is working correctly, but not one that's specifically listed in other codes. It could be many different types of implants to help a part of their body function better.

This code is used to indicate the presence of any functional implant not specifically classified elsewhere. It encompasses a wide range of devices serving various physiological functions, excluding complications related to implants, fitting or adjustments.Specific examples include but are not limited to:urogenital implants, intraocular lenses, otolaryngological implants, artificial larynges, endocrine gland implants, dental and jaw implants, orthopedic joint implants, and other bone and tendon implants.

Example 1: A patient presents for a routine follow-up appointment after receiving a cochlear implant.Code Z96.2 (Presence of otolaryngological implants) would be more appropriate, but Z96 could be used in the absence of more precise information., A patient is admitted for hip replacement surgery.Post-operatively, code Z96.6 (Presence of orthopaedic joint implants) would be recorded to reflect the presence of the new implant. Z96 could be used prior to surgery if relevant documentation and context is available., A patient presents complaining of pain around a previously implanted intraocular lens. While Z96.1 (Presence of intraocular lenses) would be more specific, Z96 may be used initially if no details of the implant are known.

Medical records should clearly document the type of implant and its location.Operative notes, imaging reports, or implant documentation should be available to support coding.

** This code is for the presence of the implant, not for any complications or procedures related to the implant.Complications should be coded separately.
