2025 CPT code 24343

Repair lateral collateral ligament, elbow, with local tissue.

Code 24343 is for repair of the lateral collateral ligament using local tissue. It does not include harvesting of a graft. If a graft is used, code 24344 should be reported.

Modifiers may be applicable. For example, modifier 54 (Surgical Care Only) is used if the surgeon only performs the surgery and another provider handles post-operative care.

Medical necessity for 24343 is established by documenting instability or pain in the elbow joint due to LCL injury, which has not responded to conservative treatment.

The physician or other qualified healthcare professional prepares the patient, administers anesthesia, performs the surgical repair, and manages post-operative care, including splinting.

In simple words: This procedure fixes a torn ligament on the outer side of your elbow using tissue from the same area. The surgeon makes a small cut to access the torn ligament and then stitches it back together, or uses small anchors to reattach it to the bone. This helps to stabilize your elbow joint. After the surgery, your elbow will be bandaged and put in a splint to keep it from moving while it heals.

This procedure involves repairing a damaged lateral collateral ligament (LCL) of the elbow using local tissue.A lateral incision is made on the elbow to expose the damaged LCL. If there is detachment, sutures, staples, or bone nails are used for reattachment.Tears along the ligament are repaired with sutures. The procedure re-establishes elbow stability. Post-operatively, the site is irrigated and sutured, and a splint is placed for immobilization.

Example 1: A baseball pitcher tears their LCL during a game and requires surgical repair using local tissue., A patient falls on an outstretched hand, resulting in a partial LCL tear that requires surgical repair., A gymnast experiences chronic LCL instability and undergoes surgical repair using surrounding tissue.

Documentation should include details of the injury, the extent of the LCL damage, the surgical technique used for repair, type of anesthesia, and post-operative instructions including splinting.

** Elbow X-rays performed before or during the procedure should be reported separately. If significant vessel exploration or neuroplasty is performed, those services should also be reported separately.
