Refer to CPT guidelines for proper coding and documentation of this procedure.

Modifiers may be applicable. Please refer to the current year's CPT guidelines to choose the appropriate modifiers.

Medical necessity must be established for this procedure. This typically includes documentation of failed conservative treatment options and the impact of the condition on the patient's quality of life.

The physician is responsible for the entire surgical procedure, including preoperative planning, the surgery itself, and postoperative care.

In simple words: This surgery replaces the lower part of the arm bone (radius) and some or all of the small wrist bones (carpals) with an artificial joint. The doctor makes a cut on the back of your hand and wrist, removes the damaged bones, and puts in the new artificial joint.

This procedure involves the replacement of the distal radius and carpal bones with a prosthesis. The surgeon makes an incision over the back of the hand and wrist, exposes the wrist joint, and removes the damaged bone. The prosthesis is then inserted and secured, and the incision is closed.

Example 1: A patient with severe arthritis of the wrist that has not responded to conservative treatment., A patient with a fracture of the distal radius and carpal bones that cannot be repaired by other methods., A patient with a wrist deformity caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

Documentation should include the diagnosis, the reason for the surgery, a description of the surgical procedure, and any complications.
