Reconstruction of polydactylous digit, soft tissue and bone.
Modifiers may be applicable, for example, if the procedure is performed on the left side (LT) or right side (RT).
Medical necessity must be established by documenting the functional impairment, pain, or other medical reason for removing the polydactylous digit.Simply having an extra digit may not be sufficient to justify the procedure.
The physician is responsible for preparing the patient, administering anesthesia, performing the surgical removal of the extra digit including bone resection, controlling bleeding, and closing the wound.
In simple words: The doctor removes an extra finger or toe that has both soft tissue and bone. They make a cut at the base of the extra digit and go through the skin and other tissues down to the bone. They cut the bone to remove the extra finger or toe. If needed, they also remove extra skin. Then they close the area with stitches.
This procedure involves reconstructing a polydactylous digit (extra finger or toe) by removing both soft tissue and bone. The surgeon makes an incision at the base of the extra digit, extending it through the soft tissue and fascia down to the bone. The bone is then cut to remove the extra digit. Excess skin is excised if necessary, and the wound is sutured in layers.
Example 1: A newborn infant is found to have an extra finger on their right hand containing bone. The surgeon performs a polydactyly reconstruction (26587) to remove the extra digit., A child has a partially developed extra toe on their left foot, which includes bone.
