2025 CPT code 29540

Application of adhesive strapping to ankle and/or foot to provide support and limit movement.

Follow CPT guidelines for musculoskeletal procedures and appropriate modifier usage (e.g., LT, RT for laterality).

Modifiers LT (left side) and RT (right side) are applicable to indicate the specific side of the body where the strapping was applied. Modifier 59 (distinct procedural service) may be used if additional services are provided on the same day.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of a musculoskeletal injury (e.g., sprain, strain, fracture) requiring immobilization and support for pain relief and healing. The strapping should be considered a medically necessary intervention to aid in the recovery process.

The provider positions the patient, prepares the area (cleans and dries), applies the tape in overlapping layers, and assesses the fit and pressure to ensure adequate support without excessive constriction.

IMPORTANT:Do not report 29540 with 29580 or 29581 for the same extremity.

In simple words: The doctor applies special tape to your ankle or foot to hold the joint or muscles in place and prevent too much movement. This helps with injuries like muscle strains, sprains, or some fractures.

Application of elastic adhesive tape to the ankle or foot to immobilize the joint or muscles, restricting excessive or abnormal movements. This procedure is indicated for managing muscle strains, dislocations, sprains, and certain fractures. The application involves positioning the patient, ensuring the area is clean and dry, and applying overlapping layers of elastic adhesive tape to achieve the desired level of support.Assessment of fit and pressure is crucial throughout the process.

Example 1: A patient presents with an acute ankle sprain after a fall. The physician applies adhesive strapping to provide support and limit painful movement, facilitating healing., A patient with a stable ankle fracture following a minor injury receives adhesive strapping for temporary immobilization and pain relief before casting., A patient with chronic plantar fasciitis receives adhesive strapping to support the arch and reduce strain on the plantar fascia, alleviating pain and promoting healing.

Patient's history and physical examination findings documenting the need for strapping (e.g., sprain, strain, fracture).Details of the strapping technique used (type of tape, layers, application areas) and patient's response to the treatment.

** If 29540 is the initial service with no other procedures planned or permitted by the payer, an appropriate E/M code and 99070 (supplies) may be reported.Modifier 25 (significant, separately identifiable E/M service) may be used if a separate E/M service is also provided.
