Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to current CPT guidelines for modifier usage.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of a foreign body in the larynx causing symptoms such as airway obstruction, difficulty breathing, or voice changes.

The physician prepares and anesthetizes the patient, inserts the laryngoscope, removes the foreign body with forceps, and uses an operating microscope or telescope to enhance visualization.

IMPORTANT Do not report 69990 (operating microscope) in addition to 31531. If the operating microscope or telescope is not used, consider 31530.

In simple words: The doctor uses a special instrument called a laryngoscope to look into your voice box and remove something stuck there. They use a microscope or telescope to see better, and you'll be asleep during the procedure so you don't feel anything.

This procedure involves inserting a laryngoscope through the mouth to directly visualize the larynx and remove a foreign body.An operating microscope or telescope is used to enhance visualization during the procedure. General anesthesia is typically administered to ensure patient comfort and stillness. Forceps are used to remove the foreign body. The larynx is then inspected to confirm complete removal and to assess for any injury.
