2025 CPT code 31576

Laryngoscopy, flexible; with biopsy(ies).

For endoscopic procedures, report the appropriate endoscopy code for each anatomic site examined. If an operating microscope or telescope is used, report the applicable code only once per operative session. All paired structures within one side of the larynx/pharynx are considered unilateral for therapeutic interventions.

Modifiers may be applicable to indicate specific circumstances of the procedure, such as increased procedural services (modifier 22), multiple procedures (modifier 51), or reduced services (modifier 52).

Medical necessity must be established by documenting the signs, symptoms, or other clinical findings that justify the need for the procedure. The documentation must support the suspicion of a condition that requires a biopsy for diagnosis.

The physician prepares the patient, administers anesthesia as appropriate, inserts the flexible laryngoscope, typically through the nose, visualizes the larynx and hypopharynx, collects tissue biopsies using forceps, and sends the samples to the lab for analysis.

IMPORTANT:Do not report 31576 in conjunction with 31572, 31578

In simple words: The doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to look at your voice box and collect small tissue samples.

This code describes a procedure where a flexible laryngoscope is used to examine the larynx and obtain tissue samples for diagnostic purposes. The larynx is visualized, and biopsies of suspicious areas or lesions are taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Example 1: A patient presents with hoarseness and a suspicious lesion on the vocal cord. A flexible laryngoscopy with biopsy is performed to evaluate the lesion., A patient with a history of smoking has persistent throat pain.A flexible laryngoscopy with biopsy is performed to rule out malignancy in the larynx., A patient has difficulty swallowing and a flexible laryngoscopy with biopsy is performed to investigate the cause.

Documentation should include the indication for the procedure, the location and description of any lesions biopsied, the number of biopsies taken, and any complications encountered.
