Complex repair of diaphragm with resection
Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to the provided list of modifiers and their descriptions for specific use cases.
Medical necessity must be established by documenting the underlying condition necessitating the diaphragmatic resection and repair (e.g., tumor, trauma, congenital hernia).
After the patient is prepped and anesthetized, the surgeon opens the chest and/or abdomen to access the diaphragm. They move structures as needed and use retractors for better visualization. The diseased area is then removed, often using electrocautery. The diaphragm is repaired to correct the defect and connect the remaining diaphragm to the costal margin (lower edge of the chest). The incision is closed in layers.
In simple words: The surgeon removes a damaged part of the diaphragm and fixes it with a complex method, which may include a prosthetic material or a tissue flap from another part of the body. This is often done to remove diseased tissue, like a tumor, in the diaphragm.
The physician resects a portion of the diaphragm and repairs it using a complex repair technique. This may involve inserting a prosthetic material or closing the diaphragm using a local muscle flap. This procedure is often performed to remove diseased tissue, such as a tumor, that has spread into the diaphragm.
Example 1: A patient with a localized tumor invading the diaphragm undergoes resection and complex repair of the diaphragm using a prosthetic material., A patient with traumatic injury to the diaphragm requires resection of the damaged tissue and complex repair using a local muscle flap., A patient with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia undergoes diaphragmatic resection and complex repair.
Documentation should include details of the size and location of the diaphragmatic defect, the method of repair (prosthetic vs. muscle flap), operative findings, and any complications.
