Partial or total esophagectomy without reconstruction, with cervical esophagostomy.

Follow current CPT coding guidelines. Accurate coding requires precise documentation of the extent of the resection and the specific type of esophagostomy.

Modifiers may apply depending on the circumstances of the procedure.Consult the CPT manual for a detailed explanation of the modifiers and their applicability.

The procedure is medically necessary for patients with esophageal cancer, severe esophageal injury, or spontaneous esophageal rupture when other less invasive treatments are not appropriate or have failed.

The surgeon is responsible for all aspects of the procedure, including pre-operative assessment, surgical technique, and post-operative care.

IMPORTANT:For gastrointestinal reconstruction following a previous esophagectomy, see codes 43360 and 43361.

In simple words: The doctor removes all or part of the food tube (esophagus) connecting your mouth to your stomach without rebuilding it.They make an opening in your neck and connect the remaining esophagus to it to drain fluids from your mouth and nose.

This procedure involves the surgical removal of all or part of the esophagus without reconstruction.A cervical esophagostomy is created, connecting the remaining upper portion of the esophagus to an opening in the neck. The procedure may be performed to remove cancerous or severely damaged portions of the esophagus, or to repair spontaneous ruptures. The surgeon makes incisions in the neck, chest, or abdomen, removes the specified portion of the esophagus, closes the cut ends of the esophagus and stomach, and creates the esophagostomy, connecting it to an appliance for drainage. The incisions are then closed in layers.

Example 1: A 65-year-old male presents with esophageal cancer.A total esophagectomy without reconstruction and cervical esophagostomy is performed., A 40-year-old female suffers a severe caustic injury to her esophagus. Partial esophagectomy without reconstruction and cervical esophagostomy is performed to remove the damaged tissue., A 70-year-old patient experiences a spontaneous esophageal rupture.Partial esophagectomy without reconstruction and cervical esophagostomy are performed to repair the rupture and manage the resulting complications.
