2025 CPT code 43231

Esophagoscopy with endoscopic ultrasound examination.

Control of bleeding during the same operative session is not reported separately. Esophagoscopy includes examination from the cricopharyngeus muscle to the gastroesophageal junction and may include examination of the proximal stomach via retroflexion.

Modifiers may be applicable to indicate specific circumstances of the procedure (e.g., increased procedural services, discontinued procedure).

Medical necessity must be established by documenting the patient's symptoms, signs, or prior diagnostic test results that justify the need for the esophagoscopy with EUS.

The physician administers anesthesia, inserts the endoscope and ultrasound transducer, performs the examination, evaluates the findings, and removes the instruments.

In simple words: The doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera and ultrasound device into your esophagus through your mouth. This allows them to see the inside of your esophagus and the surrounding tissues on a screen, helping to diagnose and assess any abnormalities.

This code represents a procedure where a flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus. An ultrasound transducer is also inserted through the endoscope to perform an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) examination. This allows for detailed visualization of the esophageal wall and surrounding tissues, aiding in the diagnosis and staging of esophageal conditions, including tumors.

Example 1: A patient presents with difficulty swallowing. An esophagoscopy with EUS is performed to evaluate for strictures, tumors, or other abnormalities., A patient with a known esophageal tumor undergoes an esophagoscopy with EUS for staging of the cancer to determine the extent of the disease., A patient experiences chest pain and an esophagoscopy with EUS is performed to rule out esophageal causes.

Documentation should include the indication for the procedure, the findings of the EUS examination, including measurements and location of any abnormalities, and any interventions performed.
