2025 CPT code 51785

Needle electromyography studies (EMG) of anal or urethral sphincter, any technique.

Modifier 51 should be used when multiple procedures from the range 51725-51798 are performed during the same session.Modifier 26 should be used if the physician only interprets the results and/or operates the equipment. For biofeedback sessions involving EMG, report a diagnostic EMG code only if a significant and separately identifiable diagnostic service is provided.

Modifiers are applicable to this code. Common modifiers include 26 (Professional Component), 51 (Multiple Procedures), and others as needed based on the specific circumstances of the procedure.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of signs or symptoms suggestive of anal or urethral sphincter dysfunction, such as incontinence or nerve damage.Pre- or postoperative evaluation of sphincter function can also justify the use of this code.

The physician performing or directly supervising the procedure is responsible for obtaining informed consent, preparing and draping the patient, inserting the needle electrodes, and interpreting the EMG results. They also ensure proper use of equipment, supplies, and medications.

IMPORTANT:For non-needle EMG of the anal or urethral sphincter, use 51784. For other urodynamic procedures, refer to codes 51725-51798.

In simple words: This procedure measures the electrical activity of the muscles that control bladder and bowel function. Small needles are inserted into the muscles, and the electrical signals are recorded. This helps doctors understand how well these muscles are working and identify any problems.

This code represents needle electromyography (EMG) studies performed on the anal or urethral sphincter using any technique. It involves inserting needle electrodes into the sphincter muscles to measure electrical activity. This procedure helps diagnose and assess conditions affecting these muscles, such as incontinence or nerve damage.

Example 1: A patient with fecal incontinence undergoes needle EMG of the anal sphincter to evaluate muscle function and identify potential nerve damage., A patient with urinary incontinence undergoes needle EMG of the urethral sphincter to assess muscle activity and diagnose the cause of incontinence., Following a surgical procedure involving the anal or urethral sphincter, needle EMG is used to evaluate the extent of muscle or nerve damage.

Documentation should include the medical necessity for the procedure, the specific technique used, the location of needle insertions, the EMG findings, and interpretation of the results. Supporting diagnostic notes and patient history should also be documented.

** Ensure that appropriate informed consent is obtained from the patient before performing this procedure. The procedure should be performed by or under the direct supervision of a physician or other qualified healthcare professional. All necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies should be provided.
