(Active) Effective Date: N/A Surgery - Surgical Procedures on the Urinary System Feed
Cystourethroscopy with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy; with lithotripsy (ureteral catheterization is included).
Modifiers may be applicable. Refer to payer guidelines.
Medical necessity must be established for this procedure.Documentation should support the diagnosis necessitating the procedure, such as a symptomatic stone causing pain, obstruction, or infection.
In simple words: This procedure involves inserting a small camera through the urethra to view the bladder, ureters, and kidney. If a kidney stone is found, it's broken down using a special instrument so the fragments can be washed out. A small tube may also be inserted to help with urine drainage.
This code describes a procedure where a cystourethroscope is inserted through the urethra into the bladder to examine the bladder and urethra.A ureteroscopy (examination of the ureters) and/or pyeloscopy (examination of the renal pelvis) are also performed. If a stone is found, lithotripsy (using shock waves, laser, or other methods) is used to break the stone into smaller pieces that can be passed or flushed out.Insertion of a ureteral catheter is included in this code.
Example 1: A patient presents with right flank pain and hematuria. Imaging reveals a stone in the right ureteropelvic junction. Cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, and laser lithotripsy are performed to fragment and remove the stone. Code 52353 is reported., A patient has a history of recurrent urinary tract infections and stones. During a cystourethroscopy with ureteroscopy, a small stone is found in the left ureter. Lithotripsy is used to break the stone, and a ureteral stent is placed. Code 52353 is used., A patient with known bladder stones undergoes a cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, and pyeloscopy. Electrohydraulic lithotripsy is performed to fragment the stones. Code 52353 is reported.
Documentation should include details of the procedure, including the size and location of the stone(s), type of lithotripsy used, and any complications encountered. The operative report should support the medical necessity of the procedure.
