Computed tomography of the maxillofacial area with contrast material(s).
Modifiers such as 26 (professional component) and TC (technical component) can be applied when appropriate.
Medical necessity for this procedure must be established based on the patient's symptoms, clinical findings, and suspected diagnosis.
The provider administers the contrast material, positions the patient, operates the CT scanner, and interprets the images to diagnose various conditions affecting the maxillofacial area.
In simple words: A CT scan uses x-rays to create detailed images of the inside of your face and upper jaw. This procedure involves a special dye, called contrast, to make the pictures even clearer for the doctor.
This code represents a computed tomography (CT) scan of the maxillofacial area, which includes the upper jaw and facial structures, performed with the administration of intravenous, intra-articular, or intrathecal contrast material.Oral or rectal contrast administration is not considered for this code.
Example 1: A patient presents with facial trauma following a car accident. A CT scan with contrast is ordered to assess the extent of the injuries to the bones and soft tissues of the face., A patient has suspected sinus infection that has not responded to treatment. A CT scan with contrast is ordered to evaluate the sinuses and surrounding structures for abnormalities., A patient presents with a lump or swelling in their jaw. A CT scan with contrast is ordered to aid in identifying tumors or other masses.
Documentation should include the reason for the CT scan, type and route of contrast administration, relevant medical history, and interpretation of the findings.
** Check with individual payers for coverage policies regarding contrast administration and supply codes.
