2025 CPT code 73525

Radiologic examination of the hip joint using arthrography; includes radiological supervision and interpretation.

Follow current CPT guidelines for radiology coding.Modifier 26 should be appended if the professional component only is being billed. Modifier 52 should be used if services are reduced.

Modifiers 26 and 52 are applicable based on the circumstances.

An arthrogram is medically necessary when other imaging modalities (e.g., plain X-rays, MRI) are insufficient to evaluate the internal structures of the hip joint. This may include cases of suspected articular cartilage injury, loose bodies, labral tears, or septic arthritis.

The physician's responsibility is limited to the supervision of the arthrogram procedure and interpretation of the resulting radiographic images. They are not responsible for performing the injection itself.

IMPORTANT:Code 77002 (Fluoroscopic guidance for needle placement) should not be reported with 73525.Codes 27093 and 27095 represent the injection procedure (without and with anesthesia, respectively). If another provider interprets the images, modifier 26 (professional component) and 52 (reduced services) should be appended to the reported codes.

In simple words: This code covers the doctor's work in overseeing and reviewing X-ray images of a hip joint after a special dye has been injected. The doctor watches the dye flow into the joint and checks X-rays taken from different angles to examine the joint’s structures. The injection process itself is billed separately.

This CPT code encompasses the radiological supervision and interpretation of a hip joint arthrogram. The procedure involves injecting contrast material into the hip joint under fluoroscopic guidance, followed by taking a series of X-rays to evaluate the joint structures. The physician's role is limited to the imaging supervision and interpretation; the injection procedure itself is coded separately (27093 without anesthesia, 27095 with anesthesia).Fluoroscopic guidance for needle placement should not be reported separately (77002).

Example 1: A patient presents with chronic hip pain and suspected osteoarthritis. An arthrogram is ordered to visualize the joint space and cartilage. The radiologist supervises the injection and interprets the images, reporting 73525., A patient has a history of hip injury and requires an arthrogram to assess for loose bodies or tears in the labrum. The orthopedic surgeon performs the injection (27095) under fluoroscopic guidance, while a radiologist oversees the imaging process and reports the findings using 73525., A patient post-hip replacement surgery experiences persistent pain. The surgeon orders an arthrogram to rule out infection or implant failure. The radiologist supervises the contrast injection and interprets the study using 73525. The surgeon performs the injection and reports the procedure code.

* Complete patient demographics and relevant medical history.* Indication for the arthrogram (e.g., clinical presentation, prior imaging, referral information).* Details of the injection procedure (type and amount of contrast material used, site of injection, any complications).* Radiographic images with clear labeling and views of the hip joint.* Physician's interpretation of the images, including detailed findings and diagnostic impressions.

** This code is specifically for the radiological supervision and interpretation of a hip arthrogram. The injection procedure should be billed separately with appropriate codes (27093 or 27095).The use of modifier 52 is indicated when there is a reduction of services.
